Widget

iOS controls when widgets refresh and may delay updates to conserve battery. Quotator tells iOS to update the widget whenever you save a change, but iOS has the final say.

If your widget is visibly stale (older than the interval you set), try these steps:

  1. Make sure the app has been opened at least once so the widget has data to display.
  2. Remove the widget from your home screen and re-add it — this forces a fresh load.
  3. Check that you haven't disabled all your quotes (disabled quotes are excluded from rotation).

Long-press the Rotating Quote widget on your home screen, tap Edit Widget, and adjust the Change Every setting. Options are: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, or once a day.

Each widget you add can have a different interval — you can have one widget rotating every hour and another rotating daily.

You can also set the default interval for widgets set to "Follow App Setting" in Quotator → Settings → Widget Rotation.

Rotating Quote cycles through your quote library on a schedule you set. You can configure it to rotate sequentially, randomly, or pin it to one specific quote (Manual mode) — plus you can filter to a particular category and set the update interval.

Specific Quote always shows exactly one quote you choose when setting up the widget. It never changes unless you edit the widget. Great for a daily mantra or a quote you want to see every day without it being replaced.

Yes. Each Rotating Quote widget is configured independently. You can add as many as you like — one showing Work category quotes on a short interval, another showing all quotes daily, another pinned to one specific quote. They're completely independent of each other.

Check two things:

  • Long-press the widget → Edit Widget. The Category setting might be filtering to one category. Change it to "All Quotes" or "Follow App Setting" if you want to see all quotes.
  • In the Quotator app, swipe right on any dimmed quotes to re-enable them. Disabled quotes are excluded from the widget entirely.

Quotes and formatting

Go to Settings → Default Formatting and set the style you want. This applies to every quote that uses Default formatting (i.e., any quote that doesn't have Custom formatting turned on).

Individual quotes set to Custom (visible in the edit screen as the Default/Custom toggle) will keep their own style.

Yes. In any color grid (text color or background color), tap the + tile at the end of the preset row. This opens the iOS system color picker where you can choose any fully opaque color using the spectrum wheel, sliders, or hex value.

Disabled quotes are excluded from widget rotation and don't appear in the widget. They stay in your library and can be re-enabled at any time by swiping right on them in the list.

This is useful for temporarily "resting" a quote — hiding it from the widget without deleting it.

The author line is only shown when the quote has an author. If the Author field is left blank when adding or editing a quote, no author line appears anywhere — not in the list, not in the widget. This is intentional: a blank attribution looks better than a dash or "Unknown".

Data and devices

Quotator does not currently sync in real time between devices. Your library lives on the device where you entered it.

To transfer your library to another device, use the iCloud Backup feature: create a backup on the first device (Settings → Backup & Restore → Create Backup), then on the other device sign in to the same iCloud account and restore from that backup.

Yes. Quotator collects no data and has no network access. Your quotes and settings are stored locally on your device in a shared app container accessible only to the Quotator app and its widget.

If you use the optional iCloud backup feature, your data is saved to your personal iCloud account. We do not have access to your iCloud data.

See our full Privacy Policy for details.

Go to Settings → Backup & Restore → Restore from Backup. You'll see a list of your saved iCloud backups sorted by date. Tap one to select it, then confirm. Your current library is replaced with the backup.

Requires iCloud Drive to be enabled on your device and the backup to have been created on an account you're signed in to.

iCloud backup requires iCloud Drive to be enabled on your device. Go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud and make sure iCloud Drive is turned on.

iCloud backup does not work in the iOS Simulator — it requires a real device.

Use the Export Quote Set feature in Settings. You can export all your quotes, by category, or pick specific quotes. The result is a .json file you can share via AirDrop, Messages, or Mail. Your friend opens the file on their phone and Quotator imports it with one tap.

All formatting (fonts, colors, categories) is preserved in the export.

Yes. Go to Settings → Import from CSV. The file should have one quote per row with up to three columns: quote text, author, and category name. Author and category are optional.

Example row: "Be the change you wish to see in the world","Gandhi","Inspiration"

You can choose to merge (add to existing library, skip duplicates) or replace all (erase first).

Focus filter

Go to iPhone Settings → Focus → [Focus name] → App Filters → Add Filter → Quotator. Set a category and rotation mode for that Focus. Repeat for each Focus mode.

When that Focus is active, your Rotating Quote widgets switch to the configured category automatically. No changes needed in the Quotator app.

No. The Specific Quote widget always shows the exact quote you chose during widget configuration. It ignores the Focus filter and always stays on the same quote.

General

Quotator is free to download. There are no in-app purchases and no subscription. All features are included at no cost.

If you have an iCloud backup, you can restore from it: Settings → Backup & Restore → Restore from Backup. Note that a restore replaces your entire current library.

If you don't have a backup, deletion is permanent. This is why creating a backup before any major changes is a good habit — it's fast and automatic once set up.
